After that, they expect the employer to provide this accommodation (or the state (Voc rehab) has decided that the Deaf person at that point has learned their job and there will be no need for communication, learning, feedback, etc :eyeroll: Voc rehab will typically pay for the interpreting for some portion of the first 90 days. I didn’t get any formal education on it when in my position (until I made many complaints about it not being part of our training and they brought a trainer in) and everything I knew came from my own experiences navigating my own workplace accommodations.īased on the 90 day comment, I’m guessing you’re a job coach employed by a voluntary agency that contracts with Voc rehab. Fortunately, she isnt mad by this and has been flexibleĮdit: the client said she's fine with it and probably should learn how to talk (as far as I understand)Įdit: the boss tried to learn a word. I said I could help her practice as well sign and write it out since she needs to be able to read work related words. She is going to have to keep practicing talking and make it clear when she doesn't understand. So anyway I had to tell my client that he's not going to meet her halfway. I realized no one asked her what is easiest for her. At least he is going to write instructions on his phone, but my client said she is so-so with reading and can do lip reading fairly well. All i said is that he needs to face her when talking to her and giving instructions. I feel bad for her because I expressed this and the boss feels like he is being coached. She does excellent on her own, but making it easier on her reduces future confusion. ![]() ![]() Part of that is making it easier for her to communicate with her boss and vice versa. Since I will be seeing her less and less as time goes on im trying to set her up for success. My job is not to interpret but to help my client with her work to make her better. I'm not an interpreter, but I understand and can sign little bit of ASL. Please try not to post homework requests here. Please report any posts that fail to match these guidelines.
